Just before Christmas my sister asked me to make a 50th birthday cake for her friend. The birthday man loves his music and was having a bit of a ‘jam’ session at his local bowling club to celebrate so I decided an electric guitar cake would be fun.
To be any fun…I had a crazy idea the guitar had to be a life size Fender Stratocaster. Here are the WIP shots.
For the wood grain effect I used the spray gun but got carried away so it ‘s a bit darker than I had liked.
Here’s a shot of the little bits and pieces going onto the cake.
I even managed to use a needle and thread for this cake. Yep, the guitar strings are a Perle 8 cotton(!) and I used the needle to thread them through the tuning pins.
It’s not everyday you blow out 50 candles so I made sure the birthday boy would have to huff and puff every single year of his age!
The cake was life size but not big enough to feed the whole party so I baked music themed cup cakes for the kids. The cakes were topped with music notes piped with royal icing.
For the cake stand I found some old vinyl records at the local op shop, bought a handle off ebay, googled some tutorials and $5 later had a pretty cool stand!
I loved how the cake stand turned out, might try this out with my stash of pretty cake plates!

Hi Sasha, yes, it’s fondant. The cake was firstly covered in chocolate ganache and then fondant and finally spray painted.

I am n Houston and looking. For someone who does guitar cakes for my hubby need by the 24th
HELP QUICK! For granddaughters 16 th B”day I want to locate the “handle” like you did to have the 3 records w/ cupcakes displayed. I have searched on e-bay and other places. Please give me more information. Who was the vendor? asking for “handle”, and other accessories for a record player or turntable did not help.
Your Guitar is a true work of Art. Congrats.Need an answer on above quickly please.
How many people did this cake feed? You did a beautiful job…
Hi Lauren, to be honest I’m really sure. The cake is the same size as an electric guitar if that helps. I made it life size more for the effect, rather than for a specified no. of servings.
Thank-you so much. I made mine life size also it turned out great
Fantastic cake! Really well done…
Just wondering what did you use to make the neck of the guitar?
How did make it hold?
Please explain in details how you made the neck / head of the guitar look so real. Thank you in advance.
Hi Anna,
To make the neck I shaped some styrofoam and then covered it in fondant.
How did you make the handle on the guitar cake?
that is a creative work of genius
Amazing cake!! I am making one for my boyfriends birthday….designed on his own guitar which I am now panicking over.. how did you.create the knobs and switches??
What kind of handle is it for the guitar cake?
The handle is made of styrofoam covered in fondant.
Peta, You don’t happen to have a tutorial and pattern for sale for this cake, by chance? I have to make a guitar cake next week, and the pattern would be sooooo helpful for all the little bits and pieces. Thanks!

We are looking to make a 3D guitar cake for our boss birthday party. Do you operate in Singapore?
Appreciate if you can contact me at my email address. Thank you.
Coolest I’ve ever seen! How did you make the record cupcake stand? 💜💜👏🏼
Love both the cake and cupcake stand!! What did you use for the center of the cupcake stand? Where did you get the piece that goes up thru the center of the records?
